Sensitive files’ stolen as Saudi motorcade is ambushed in Paris

A 12-vehicle entourage transporting a Saudi royal to a Paris airport was ambushed on Monday in cinematic fashion by heavily armed men, who stole a suitcase full of cash and diplomatic files described as “sensitive”. French police are trying to determine whether the ambush, which occurred on Monday evening just north of downtown Paris, was aimed at the money or the documents, which French newspaper Le Parisien described as “sensitive”. According to French police, the Saudi motorcade was heading from the renowned Four Seasons George V hotel on the Champs Elysées to Le Bourget airport, 15 miles north of Paris, which handles private jets. But as the convoy drove through Porte de la Chapelle, two BMWs without license tags suddenly made their way to the top of the motorcade and forced it to stop. Within seconds, eight heavily armed men brandishing handguns and AK-47s stormed out of the two cars and hijacked a Mercedes minivan that was part of the motorcade. Several of them boarded the vehicle and drove away, taking with them its three occupants, a driver, a bodyguard and another official. Later on, the three hostages were abandoned by the side of the road. The minivan, as well as one of the two BMWs used by the armed assailants, were later found burnt out in the village of Saint-Mesmes, northeast of the French capital. But the thieves took with them a suitcase containing €250,000 ($330,000) in cash, as well as what the French press said were “important diplomatic documents”. One French police detective told journalists that the operation was “clearly an ambush by a commando group that was well-informed” about the movements of their target and “quite expert [...] and aware of what they would find by attacking this one vehicle [the Mercedes minivan] and not the others”. Another police detective said the nature of the incident would change drastically into “something more complicated” if it were determined that the gunmen were going after the documents, and not the cash in the minivan. Police sources have not revealed the identity of the Saudi royal involved in the incident. ISIS views spread in Balkans as Kosovo police nab 40 militants

Over 40 people have been arrested in Kosovo on strong suspicion of maintaining close links with the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. Authorities in the small Balkan nation said the Monday arrests were part of “a major police operation” aimed at preventing Kosovar citizens from joining the violent Islamist group. Kosovo gained independence from Serbia in 2008, following several revolts and uprisings in the 1990s. The vast majority of its citizens are ethnic Albanians, most of whom practice Islam. However the lifestyle of its largely pro-American population remains markedly secular. Observers have thus been startled by reports that an estimated 100 to 200 Kosovars have so far traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State, known previously as the State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS. Last week, an 18-year-old Islamic State volunteer from Kosovo was reported killed in Syria; he was the 16th Kosovar member of the Islamist group to have been killed in the field of battle. There is allegedly footage on YouTube showing Lavdrim Muhaxheri, the commander of the Kosovar Islamic State members decapitating an Iraqi teenager. Aside from the detention of 40 suspects, the Monday crackdown is believed to have netted significant numbers of weapons and ammunition discovered in more than 60 locations around the country. Police said that the dates of birth of the arrestees range from 1962 to 1994. Authorities are looking for more suspects who were “not found at their homes” during the countrywide crackdown, while many Muslim clerics are also being investigated for links to radical Islamist groups. The 40 that are in custody are now being questioned under procedures recently established by the Kosovo Penal Code, designed to protect “constitutional order and security in the Republic” of Kosovo. Reports from the tiny Balkan nation suggest that its parliament is preparing to pass national legislation forbidding citizens form joining foreign armed movements. A prison sentence of up to 15 years is being considered for those who do so. It is worth noting that Albanian is among the primary languages into which the Islamic State’s Arabic-language proclamations are usually translated by the militants —the others being Russian, Turkish, English and French

Protesters who oppose Canada’s position in the Israel-Palestinian conflict interrupted a speech Friday by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird in London, Ont.

Baird was speaking to the Chamber of Commerce about global challenges that could affect Canada’s economy and security in the future when the incident happened.

James Foley's ISIS executioner has British accent

The British killer who beheaded journalist James Foley was being hunted last night as U.S. President Barack Obama condemned the Islamic terrorists behind the murder as a “cancer” that had massacred innocents.

“From governments and peoples across the Middle East, there has to be a common effort to extract this cancer so that it does not spread,” he said.



“There has to be a clear rejection of this kind of nihilistic ideology.”

American and British intelligence agents believe clues contained in the video of Mr. Foley’s murder will reveal both the killer’s identity and location.

Despite being deliberately filmed in a barren, featureless landscape, with the man wearing a hood, the four-minute film has a wealth of information, including his voice, height and the fact he is left-handed, a trait shared by only 10% of people.

The sophisticated video, uploaded to YouTube by the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), was shot using high-quality equipment, which will also play into investigators’ hands because of the clarity of the image and the killer’s voice.

Elizabeth McClelland, a forensic voice and speech analyst who is regularly called as an expert witness in British courts, said the knifeman appeared to have a South London accent and spoke English as his first language, with the possible influence of Farsi, which could suggest a family link to Afghanistan.

“The MI5 experts may use a computer program to narrow down their search, comparing the voice in the video to voices they already have on file. But a computer can’t pick out an exact match, that still relies on the trained human ear, because there is no such thing as a unique ’voice print,’ ” she said.

“The analysts will listen to the tone or timbre of the voice, the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, the duration of each syllable as well as the accent and use of grammar.”


Security sources warned it was possible the voice was dubbed onto the video, which could mean the man heard speaking is not the man seen in the video.

Using 40-year-old victim’s known height as a guide, the experts will be able to work out his killer’s height. His slim body shape and the colour of his skin — which suggests he is black or of Asian origin — will further help to narrow their search.

Even his beige desert boots may enhance their knowledge of where he has been.

Saudi Arabia's King Has Issued a Gaza-Shaped Rorschach Test

King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia released a statement Friday that touched on the violence in Gaza. The text was issued on Saudi state-run television and mentioned terrorism, Islam, Islam and terrorism, war crimes — basically, a whole host of bad things. And it touched off rampant speculation.

The gist of the statement is that it’s bad when people conduct acts of terrorism in the name of Islam. King Abdullah goes on to reaffirm the Saudi commitment to fighting terrorism, but expresses disappointment with everyone else’s follow-up on earlier proposals for an International Center for Counter-Terrorism. He then expresses extreme dismay at all the death and madness in Gaza — without actually mentioning the words Hamas or Israel.



An uninformed observer could be forgiven for assuming that Hamas and Israel are fighting in two completely different places called Gaza. According to some media coverage, in one Gaza, Israel is committing war crimes and atrocities hither, thither, and yon while Hamas nobly defends innocents. An entirely different group of media is apparently covering a Gaza in which Hamas are unhinged killers bent on Israel's destruction, and Israel is bending over backward to avoid civilian casualties while defending itself from the relentless assault.

Different groups of journalists, activists, journalists acting like activists, and activists trying to pass themselves off as journalists have wildly different reads on what the King said.

For example, the Associated Press (via ABC News) takes the statement as a condemnation of the war in general, accusing both Israel and Hamas of committing "various forms" of terrorism. Meanwhile, NBC was working with copy from Reuters, and summarized the King’s message as an accusation that Israel is committing “war crimes against humanity and mass slaughter.” (Although the article does note that the King is none too happy with Hamas, either.)

The National — a publication out of the United Arab Emirates — described the statement as an indictment of the world’s silence over war crimes being committed in Gaza. But the National noticeably did not say whether it's Israel or Hamas committing the war crimes.

The headline from Al Manar in Lebanon: Saudi King Calls Israeli Incursion "State-Sponsored Terrorism." Al Arabiya, a Saudi outlet, describes the statement as being mostly about counterterrorism with an indirect allusion to Israel. Meanwhile, the Times of Israel notes that the remarks stop short of directly condemning Israel for its ground campaign.

So what did the King really mean to say?



Well, for starters, public statements like this should be read in context. The Middle East is incredibly complex. The various countries, factions, and actors all have many relationships to balance and judge, which they often do imperfectly. The fighting in Gaza has generated such feverish passions that for many observers, it really doesn’t matter what the King intended to say. Supporters of Israel and supporters of Palestine will likely read the statement as supporting their actions and condemning those of their opponents.

In short, the statement means two things. First, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz meant everything he said. Second, what he meant to say is that he completely agrees with you.

The office of the prime minister of Canada has banned reporters working for China’s state-owned media from covering the Canadian leader’s official trip to the Arctic, due to concerns that they may be spies. For the past several summers, Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper has undertaken official tours of the Canadian Arctic, in an effort to promote the country’s northern economy and attend military exercises. However, in a move that has raised eyebrows in Ottawa and Beijing, the organizers of the trip have issued a ban on a number of Chinese reporters from joining the Canadian prime minister’s entourage.

The Winnipeg Sun reported on Wednesday that the unprecedented step was taken over concerns that the Chinese journalists in question may in fact be intelligence operatives in the service of China. The paper cited a quote by a spokesman from the office of the prime minister, who reportedly told the Québecor Média International news agency that “certain news outlets are no longer welcome” to travel with the prime minister. It appears that the reporters in question include primarily those working for The People’s Daily newspaper and the Xinhua news agency, both of which are owned by the government of China.

Two Chinese journalists working for these outlets, Li Xue Jiang, and Zhang Dacheng, caused controversy during Harper’s trip to the Arctic in 2013. The two appeared to show more interest in photographing their fellow journalists and the interior of Canada’s prime ministerial airplane than covering Harper’s trip. Li even wrote an article for the Chinese-language edition of The People’s Daily at the time, in which he mentioned that he had come under suspicion of spying for China, saying that a secretary from the office of the Canadian prime minister had tasked an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to keep an eye on him.
